Teignmouth is a
fine, traditional, seaside town, which dates from the
time of the Domesday Book. It is a prosperous and bustling
port yet, at the same time a quaint and colourful holiday
resort. It is a harmonious blend of the old and the
new, from the understated elegance of the Georgian and
Victorian era, to the thriving holiday resort of today.
The town has operated as a commercial port for hundreds
of years and its importance continues today. It has
existed as a holiday resort since Georgian times and
has grown tremendously since the coming of Brunel`s
famous railway in 1847. It lies in the lea of the Haldon
Hills and enjoys a favourably mild climate.
Situated at the mouth of the river Teign with its safe
and sheltered harbour, Teignmouth benefits from two
delightful Blue Flag bathing beaches: the long, sandy
main beach with its traditional Victorian pier and the
secluded back beach with its rows of colourful beach
huts and fishing boats. The wide seafront promenade
with its colourful flower beds, tropical palms and tennis
courts is a popular attraction for residents and visitors
alike. There are the usual school and church facilities,
while the town centre itself boasts an excellent variety
of quaint shops, pubs and restaurants. A host of clubs
and societies cater for the interests of all tastes
and ages.
All manner of water based activities can be enjoyed
in the immediate area, from fishing and deep sea diving
to sailing and seine boat racing. During the summer
months, pleasure boats chug lazily along the coast and
there are fishing trips around the bay. There is a superb
18 hole golf course on the edge of the town, as well
as a popular Lido close to the beach and a well-equipped
leisure centre. A passenger ferry to the pretty village
of Shaldon has existed since the 11th Century and the
surrounding hills and countryside are popular with walkers
and riders alike.
Regular buses and trains allow easy access to Dawlish,
Newton Abbot, Torbay, the City of Exeter, Plymouth and
the rest of the Country, while Dartmoor is only half
an hour’s drive away. |
