The City of Exeter,
which lies on the banks of the River Exe, is steeped
in history and full of character with a population of
around 105,000. It is the County town of Devon and is
surrounded by beautiful countryside. It is also close
to the South Devon Coast and the National Parks of Dartmoor
and Exmoor.
Exeter was founded as the town of Isca in 50AD and
fortified by the Romans in 200AD with part of the original
walls remaining today. The magnificent Gothic Cathedral
was built during the 14th Century, although the two
Norman towers date from 1110. It is considered to be
among the finest cathedrals in England. There are many
other fine buildings to be seen around the Cathedral
Green, a number of which date from when Sir Francis
Drake frequented the City.
Although the City suffered much damage during the blitz
of the Second World War it still retains plenty of character.
The Guildhall in the High Street dates back to 1330
and is believed to be the oldest working municipal building
in the Country. The medieval underground passages were
constructed in the 14th and 15th Centuries to provide
a reliable supply of fresh water and they are now open
to the public beneath the City centre.
The quaint quayside, with its unique blend of historic
buildings and modern luxury homes, boasts many interesting
craft shops and is also the location of the first purpose
built Custom House in the Country. There are also delightful
river walks with pavement cafes and continental style
bars reflecting Exeter’s growing popularity as
a tourist destination. Although retaining its undoubted
sense of history, Exeter continues to be a thriving
centre for commerce and culture, as it has since Roman
times. There are new business parks, an expanding airport,
theatres and an annual Festival. The highly regarded
University stands in its own glorious grounds close
to the centre of the City.
The City Centre is currently undergoing major redevelopment
to enhance and complement its wonderful selection of
over 600 shops, which include many ‘multiple’
stores, exclusive small retailers, open air markets
and antique shops, as well as numerous restaurants,
bistros and bars, which cater for every taste and pocket.
They all combine to make the beautiful City of Exeter
the undoubted jewel in the crown of Devon.
