Dawlish is a charming
seaside town, which dates back to Saxon times, and is
situated on a picturesque stretch of coastline between
the estuaries of the rivers Exe and Teign. From its
humble beginnings as a small fishing village, Dawlish
blossomed into a holiday resort with the coming of the
railway in 1846, when Isambard Kingdom Brunel opened
his famous line from Exeter to Torbay. Dawlish lies
within Lyme Bay and has three bathing beaches, while
the holiday resort of Dawlish Warren, with its long
sandy beach, nature reserve and 18 hole golf course
lies only a short distance away.
Regular buses and trains allow easy access to Teignmouth,
Newton Abbot, Torbay, the City of Exeter (13 miles to
the north) and the rest of the Country, while Dartmoor
is only half an hour’s drive away. The town has
traditionally been popular as a retirement destination
but, with the continuing expansion of Exeter as a business
and cultural centre, it now increasingly attracts a
wider range of house buyers.
Dawlish has an excellent variety of shops and amenities,
including a leisure centre and heated swimming pool,
public playing fields, tennis courts, bowling greens
and pitch and putt. There are the usual school and church
facilities. Sailing, fishing and other water based activities
may be enjoyed in the locality. There is a second 18
hole golf course in Teignmouth, just 3 miles along the
coast.
Dawlish is renowned for its Lawn, Pleasure Gardens,
lovely Victorian and Georgian architecture, and of course
the famous black swans which frequent the Brook and
are the symbol of the town. The surrounding hills and
countryside are popular with walkers and riders alike.
Dawlish continues to attract thousands of visitors each
year, many of whom return time and again before retiring
to this beautiful little corner of Devon.
